I’ve not been my best lately and whenever that happens, I know that I’m probably not calm enough and happy enough with the way my life is going.

Usually that’s because I’ve had too much on my plate. More specifically, there has been too much I HAVE TO do.

I have to write articles for my blogs. I have to go to work (I still do). I have to drive and sit in traffic. I have to design new accessories. I have to take photos of them. I have to work out. I have to make dinner for my family. I have to go out.

You’re probably not a stranger to feeling overloaded with stuff you have to do. But when you get into that mindset, you will soon start doing most things just because you “have to”.

But yesterday I remembered I read a great trick a while ago: how changing just one word makes so much difference – switching from I HAVE TO to I GET TO every time it pops up in my head.

I get to write articles for my blogs. I get to go to work. I get to drive and sit in the traffic. I get to design new accessories. I get to take photos of them. I get to work out. I get to make dinner for my family. I have to go out.

When we’re stressed and overworked, we forget how many of the things we do are real blessings. So many people would give their all to get to do the things we have to do. Our work, our friends, our hobbies, our health – they’re gifts, not burdens.

We’re normally not aware how often we say “I have to” every day. Paying attention to the stories we tell ourselves is the first step. Telling a different story is the second.

The moment I switch from “I have to” to “I get to”, I start enjoying life again. I realize how amazing it is – I have a job, two blogs, my own fashion brand, a car, friends, good health. I can actually drive, go out and exercise while so many people can’t afford to.

I instantly become happier. Then work gets back on track because happy people are far more productive and successful.
