Our understanding of a subject, as huge as it may be, has limits. This is as obvious as it gets.
Yet, I often forget what that means – that there is no way to understand something better than you currently do, unless you stretch the limits of your understanding.
Today, I spent time thinking what stretching my limits means.
First, I need to find them. And as I most certainly don’t know where they stand, I have to guess. Or, perhaps, try to explain what I know. The things I can’t explain should be my limits.
Then, I need to push those limits. Which means asking tough questions and persisting until I get a good answer from myself.
Both will take practice but there’s one thing I’m sure – if every night I ask myself “Did I stretch the limits of my musical understanding today?”, and the answer on most nights is “Yes”, I would be a better musician in no time.
